Since our establishment in 2016, this institution has stood as a beacon of hope and progress for healthcare in our province and nation. From our humble beginnings, we have grown into a thriving center of learning—dedicated to producing nurses who are not only skilled and knowledgeable but also compassionate and committed to serving our people.

At WNBSON, we uphold the belief that nurses are the heartbeat of healthcare. Guided by our motto, “Cultivating Excellence in Nursing, Rooted in Commitment and Care,” we prepare our students to meet the challenges of modern healthcare with courage, integrity, and professionalism.

Welcome to West New Britain School of Nursing where we are dedicated to cultivating the next generation of compassionate and skilled nursing professionals. Established in 2016 the school is committed to excel in nursing education, our institution combines rigorous academic programs with hands on clinical experiences, ensuring that our graduates are well prepared to meet the challenges of the evolving health landscape and demanding health care system.

History of the college

Pioneer Students of 2015

West New Britain School of Nursing is a vibrant nursing college established as early as 2016, to its current state offering the Diploma General Nursing. Its formation and establishment evolved from the Rabaul Queen Disaster in the hope to retain students searching for Tertiary Education in other parts of Papua New Guinea.  In 2019, the college gained its recognition as a tertiary institution governed by the National Department of Health before its transition to DHERST in 2023.

As a national recognized State operated, Higher Education Institution, WNBSON has enrolled over 1000 students since 2016 enrolling both Non School Leavers and School Leavers with diverse background of origin and achievement of educational qualification from FODE, Matriculation, Flexible Learning and Direct School Leavers.

WNBSON has employed 15 full time Nurse Educators, 17 Professional and Support personnels.

At West New Britain School of Nursing, we prioritize a holistic approach to education, fostering not only clinical expertise but also critical thinking, leadership, and ethical practice. Our experienced teachers equipped with diverse expertly and experience in nursing and health care, mentor students through the collaborative leaning environment emphasizing teamwork, communication, and patient centered care.

We offer the Diploma General Nursing program, with required teaching and learning resources to provide necessary learning experience in building confidence in their practice. Our commitment extends beyond the classroom through community engagement initiative and partnerships with local health care providers to empower our students to apply their knowledge to real world settings making positive impact on the health of our community.

We are proud to be an integral part of the West New Britain Community. Out students and faculty participate in various outreach initiatives, providing health education and health services to underserved populations.

1.6.1: The West New Britain School of Nursing shall advance in educating young nurses of this country for the benefit of the individual, the community and the nation as a whole. According to the National Health Plan 2011-2010,

1.6.2: We are dedicated to providing exceptional nursing education that prepares students to be compassionate, skilled and ethical health care professionals. Our mission is to advance nursing practice through innovative teaching, research and community engagement

1.6.3: The School of Nursing will strive to ensure that the graduates are responsive to the health needs of the people and improve health care systems through nursing education. The school will strive for excellence at all times and make changes as required. (WNBSON 2016, p.15)

1.9: Institution Purpose

Our mission is to Educate and Prepare nurses who are equipped with:

  • Personal Qualities in demonstrating competent and safe nursing practices required of a nurse who works collaboratively with other health professionals promoting team work:
  • Intellectual achievements in generating knowledge of the theoretical basis of professional nursing and apply evidence-based practice.
  • Practical attitudes to practice a wide variety of nursing skills and practices, demonstrating a satisfactory level of clinical competence, professionalism and safety, promoting healthful living with patients and other team members.
  • Our graduates will be willing to serve in any urban or rural health settings in their community, country, people and their God.

Consistent with its Philosophy and mission statements, West New Britain School of Nursing has the following objectives:

  • Provide high quality education with in a Nursing Professional context
  • Provide a caring and supportive environment which facilitates the full development of each student’s potential
  • Facilitate a balanced lifestyle in harmony with Christian principles
  • Promote commitment to the ideals of service, integrity and equity
  • Equip graduates for leadership roles in the community, their profession and the Health Institution.

1.11: Aims of the program

  1. To prepare nurses with knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable them to function competently and effectively in the health care delivery system.
  2. To prepare nurses who can accept responsibility for their own professional judgments and continuing professional development.
  3. To provide an educational and professional basis for further career      developments in nursing practice, nursing education, leadership, management and research.
  4. To prepare nurses who can work collaboratively with other health professionals to promote and maintain individual, family and community health in Papua New Guinea.
